A French national, Bertrand Franquet, has become a fugitive after allegedly defrauding a local community in Rivergee County and fleeing Liberia while facing criminal charges. Franquet, who arrived in the country as a gold-mining investor, entered an agreement with residents of Gmainbo Chiefdom to mine gold on their land.

Under the deal, he promised to pay the community US$1,000 monthly, provide six percent of all gold produced, and embark on major social development projects, including the construction of a school, clinic, and roads.

However, in order to secure the agreement, Franquet reportedly forged the signature of his own agent, Allioune Kebe, Liberia’s Sports Ambassador for Youth Development. The forged signature was used to validate the contract with the community. When the forgery was uncovered, Franquet was arrested by the Monrovia City Court, but later managed to escape judicial oversight.

After spending nine months in Rivergee, Franquet allegedly mined over 500 grams of gold, valued at thousands of U.S. dollars, but failed to honor a single obligation to the community. Instead of delivering their promised benefits, he abruptly fled the country, abandoning both his commitments and the legal case against him.

Judicial authorities have since declared Bertrand Franquet a wanted man in Liberia, calling on regional and international partners to assist in bringing him back to face charges of forgery, fraud, and economic sabotage.

Bertrand is now officially a fugitive , wanted by Liberian courts.
