A historic milestone was achieved as the Government of Liberia, through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) officially signed a Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action.

The signing ceremony brought together key partners and stakeholders committed to advancing child-sensitive and climate-resilient development across Liberia. Representing the Government of Liberia, Dr. Emmanuel King Urey Yarkpawolo, Executive Director of the EPA, joined Mr. Gernot Laganda, UNICEF’s Global Technical Director for Climate Resilience, in endorsing the declaration.

This landmark agreement seeks to ensure that national climate actions and policies place children and young people at the center of development priorities. It also emphasizes building resilience among communities most affected by climate change, particularly those where children face increased risks from floods, droughts, and environmental degradation.

Through this partnership, Liberia and UNICEF reaffirm their joint commitment to promoting education, awareness, and youth participation in climate governance. The declaration further aligns with Liberia’s national climate agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring that future generations inherit a safer, greener, and more sustainable environment.

This moment marks a new chapter in protecting Liberia’s children while building climate-resilient communities nationwide.
