Nimba County — The head of the Nimba County branch of the Group of 77 Disabled Persons Organization, Amos T. Gbawon, 52, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for raping a 1-year-11-month-old baby girl.

Gbawon, who also served as co-chairman of the organization, was found guilty following a detailed trial at the Eighth Judicial Circuit Court in Sanniquellie. The verdict was delivered by Judge Musa S. Sidibey, who described the act as a severe crime against humanity and an abuse of trust.

According to the court’s findings, the incident occurred within the Nimba County Disabled Community facility, where both the convict and the victim resided in separate apartments. The facility, meant to provide support for persons with disabilities, became the scene of an unthinkable act that has deeply disturbed residents and community members.

The court, which was specially assigned to handle sexual offense cases, determined that the evidence presented , including medical reports and witness testimonies ,overwhelmingly proved Gbawon’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

In his ruling, Judge Sidibey emphasized that disability does not exempt anyone from accountability, stressing that such inhumane acts must be met with the full weight of the law.

Following the judgment, child protection advocates and community leaders expressed relief over the sentence but called for stronger preventive measures and awareness campaigns to safeguard children from sexual abuse across Liberia.

Gbawon was immediately taken into custody to begin serving his sentence.
