Travelers Slam “Sky-High” Airport Taxes at Liberia’s RIA

Liberian travelers are criticizing what they describe as “insane” airport taxes at Roberts International Airport (RIA). A Facebook post by Delmas Ella Massaley recently went viral after she revealed that over $400 in taxes were added to her $191 flight from Accra, Ghana, to Monrovia. Her total cost? $669.50.

    The breakdown included:

    • Airport Service Fee (Liberia): $85
    • Passenger Service Charge (Ghana): $60
    • Safety and Security Fee (Liberia): $30
    • Ticket Tax (Liberia): $50
    • Airline Fuel Fee: $22
    • Airport Tax: $206
    • Cart Taxes: $25.50

Massaley called the charges “complete scamming,” arguing that a two-hour West African flight should not cost more than $250 round trip, and criticized Liberia for charging even for basic services like luggage carts.

The post has sparked heated discussions online, with many travelers claiming that high airport taxes discourage flying out of Liberia, while pointing fingers at authorities for failing to regulate fees.

The Liberia Airport Authority, which manages RIA, has previously faced criticism for high operational costs and limited amenities compared to other regional airports. If taxes remain unchanged, analysts warn that Liberia could continue to lose travelers to neighboring countries like Ghana and Sierra Leone, where flight costs are significantly lower.
